Report a bug in Vivaldi on iOS

In this article we’ve put together some guidelines that will help you write a good bug report for Vivaldi on iOS. A good bug report will help our developers reproduce and fix the bug.

Before reporting a bug

Before you report a bug, please try our troubleshooting suggestions and check the Forum‘s iOS category. Well-known bugs, updates and temporary workarounds are often discussed there.

If you can’t find anything about the bug you’ve encountered please file a bug report.

How to report a bug in Vivaldi on iOS?

  • Report each bug separately on vivaldi.com/bugreport/. Reports with more than one bug cannot be processed because each bug is allocated a unique bug tracker number.
  • Share information about the device’s brand, model and iOS version where the issue is occurring.
  • Describe the issue in as much detail as you can.
  • Add an exact link to a web page where the issue occurs, so it can be tested.
  • After reporting the issue, you will receive a confirmation email from the bug tracker with the bug number VIB-XXXXX, so make sure you give a valid contact email address.
  • You can add more information and files (e.g. screenshots) to the report by replying to the bug tracker’s email.

If you have questions about the bug please ask in the Forum first and do not forget to post the VIB-XXXXX bug number. Our helpful forum moderators will be able to help you.

Important! Please do not use the bug report page for support or other questions.

Thanks for helping us make Vivaldi better!

Block Trackers and Ads in Vivaldi on iOS

In addition to Vivaldi not tracking you, we protect you from web trackers and give you the option to block ads.

Tracker blocker

Tracker blocker prevents ubiquitous web trackers from following you around the web and from gathering personal data about you. When the feature is enabled, trackers are blocked by relying on lists of well-known tracker URLs and stopping requests to those URLs before they are ever sent.

Ad blocker

While blocking trackers, the Tracker Blocker also blocks many of the ads on websites. So, the Ad Blocker can be viewed as an additional level of protection you can use to block ads that the Tracker Blocker hasn’t already blocked.

We recommend blocking trackers on all sites, but blocking ads only on sites where they are intrusive or distracting. As ads are a big, if not the only, source of revenue for most websites consider not enabling Ad Blocker by default to support content makers.

Blocking settings

To change the blocking level for all websites:

  1. Go to Vivaldi menu button Vivaldi Menu > Settings > Ad and Tracker Blocker > Default Blocking Level.
  2. Choose between:
    • No Blocking,
    • Block Trackers, or
    • Block Trackers and Ads.

Blocking per site

To change the blocking level for a particular website, while the site is open in the active tab:

  1. Tap on the blocker shield button Content Blocker button on the left side of the Address Bar.
  2. Choose between:
    • No Blocking,
    • Block Trackers, or
    • Block Trackers and Ads.

Alternatively, you can add sites to the Exception List from Vivaldi menu button Vivaldi Menu > Settings > Ad and Tracker Blocker > Exceptions > Manage blocking level per site:

  1. Tap on  Add New Domain.
  2. Enter the website’s link.
  3. Select the blocking level.
  4. Tap Add New Domain.

To change the level of blocking for exceptions:

  1. Tap on the website on the exceptions list.
  2. Choose between:
    • No Blocking,
    • Block Trackers, or
    • Block Trackers and Ads.
  3. Tap Update.

To remove a website from the Exceptions List:

  1. Tap on the website on the list.
  2. Tap on Remove.
Alternatively, change the blocking level to your default setting.

Blocking Sources

You can view and manage Tracker and Ad Blocking sources in  Vivaldi menu button Vivaldi Menu > Settings > Ad and Tracker Blocker > Sources.

To enable a blocking source, tick the box for the listed source. Untick to stop using the blocking source.

Adding Lists

If the blocking source you want to use for Tracker and Ad blocking isn’t already listed, you can import more sources by:

  1. Tap on  Add New Source.
  2. Enter the URL of the blocker rules.
  3. Tap Import.

Hide Cookie warnings

Since Europe’s GDPR and a few other user privacy laws don’t allow placing cookies in your browser without consent, most websites ask for your permission as the first thing after the web page is loaded. The fastest option is to just accept everything, which always serves the interests of the website not the user. The other option is to manage your preferences and disable the data usage options all at once, if you’re lucky, or one by one, if the website wants to make it especially cumbersome.
Vivaldi offers a third option by including two blocker lists in the Ad Blocker that hide these banners and dialogs on most websites. To enable these lists:

  1. Go to Vivaldi menu button Vivaldi menu > Settings > Ad and Tracker Blocker.
  2. Enable Block Trackers and Ads.
  3. Go to Sources > Manage Ad Blockings Sources.
  4. Enable “Remove cookie warnings (Easylist Cookie List)” and “Remove cookie warnings (I don’t care about cookies)”.

If you only wish to hide the cookie warnings, but don’t want to block ads, disable other blocking sources.

Please note that not all cookies are used for creating behavioral profiles about users. Some are necessary for the website to function. When the website you’re viewing doesn’t look or work as it should, please disable the blockers. You can do so per site from the Content Blocker menu on the Address Bar.

  • DuckDuckGo (d) – a search engine that doesn’t track users.
  • Ecosia (e) – a search engine that plants trees.
  • Wikipedia (w) – for searching the Wikipedia free online encyclopedia.
  • Google (g) – for searching the web via Google.

Switching Search Engines with Search Engine Nicknames

In the list above and in Vivaldi’s Search settings, you can see single letters following the search engine names, for example, ‘d’ for DuckDuckGo. These are Search Engine Nicknames. Using Search Engine Nicknames allows you to easily change the search engine for a single search without having to change any settings.

To disable Search Engine Nicknames:

  1. Go to Settings > Search Engine.
  2. Disable Enable Search Engine Nicknames.

Searching from a website

To search for a word or a phrase you found on a website:

  1. Highlight the search term by pressing on the word/phrase.
  2. In the menu that appears, tap on Search with Vivaldi.

The Search will be done with your default search engine.

  1. Long pressing on an empty space on the home screen.
  2. Tap on Add in the top right corner.
  3. Find Vivaldi from the list and tap on it.

Add custom Search Engines

It’s unfortunately not possible to add custom Search Engines in the iOS version of Vivaldi, but you can use Sync to synchronize your Search Engines, including custom ones, with the desktop version of Vivaldi.

Sync browser data on iOS

Sync bookmarks, passwords, open tabs and more between your desktop and mobile devices by logging-in to your Vivaldi Account.

Important! Sync is not meant to be used as a data backup service. If the data is not stored locally on any devices, we can’t guarantee you’ll be able to restore the data on a later date.

Access Sync

To access Sync settings, go to Vivaldi menu > Settings > Sync > Log in. If you don’t have a Vivaldi account, tap on Create an Account below the page title to register.

First, log in to your Vivaldi account with your account’s username and login password. Your login password is sent to our servers over a secure connection and a hash of it is stored in our database.

In case you don’t have an account yet, create a new Vivaldi account in the Settings window or on Vivaldi.net. With a Vivaldi account, in addition to Sync, you’ll get access to the ForumVivaldi Social, Webmail, Themes and Blogs.

Encryption password

If it’s your first time using Sync, you need to create the encryption password that is used for encrypting your data. The password needs to be at least 12 characters long and you can use any letters, number and characters in it. We recommend using a password that’s different from your login password. Your encryption password is used locally on your computer for encrypting the data you’re about to send to our servers and to decrypt the received data. Your encryption password is never sent to us or any other third party, which ensures that we cannot decrypt your data. This also means that even if someone should get access to your account’s username and login password, it’s impossible for them to find out the encryption password, unless you yourself have shared it with them.

It can happen that you forget the encryption password. When you have the data stored locally and can still access it, forgetting the password isn’t a big deal. You’ll just need to reset the encryption password and upload all the data again. Should you not have access to your browser data on any devices (for example, you used Sync only on one device and had to reset the OS, losing all your data), restoring it requires to have prepared for this beforehand by saving a backup encryption key in a safe place.

Backup Encryption Key

Backup encryption key is an alternative method to the encryption password for decrypting your Sync data. Like with the encryption password, your backup encryption key is never sent to us or any other third party, which ensures that we cannot decrypt your data. For it to be useful, you need to save the key in a safe location, while you can access your Sync settings with the encryption password.

Save the backup encryption key

  1. Log in to your Vivaldi account in Vivaldi menu > Settings > Sync.
  2. Enter the encryption password.
  3. Near the bottom of the page, look for Backup Encryption Key.
  4. Tap Save and save the key file to your device.

The key is valid until you reset the remote Sync data. We recommend storing the key file in a location that can survive something irreparable to your device, such as an external memory drive or a trusted cloud service.

Use the backup encryption key

  1. Log in to your Vivaldi account in Settings > Sync.
  2. When asked for the encryption password, click Load Encryption Key.
  3. Click Load and find the key file.
  4. Click Open.
  5. Start syncing.

Syncing on Mobile

Once you’ve logged in and entered the encryption password, you can select whether to Sync all data or just some of it.

Types of data that can be synced:

Enabling your preferred options will immediately start sync.

The first Sync, especially with big profiles, can take some time, so you might need to wait a little for all the synced data to appear on your mobile device.

Send Tab to Device

When you have Tabs sync enabled, you’ll find all your open tabs in the Synced Tabs pane in the Tab Switcher. If you want to quickly open a specific tab on another synced device, use the Send Tab to Device feature.

To send a tab from Android:

  1. Open the tab you want to send.
  2. Go to the Vivaldi menu > Share Page.
  3. Select Send to Your Devices.
  4. Choose to which synced device you want to send the tab to.

To open a received tab:

  1. After sending the tab from the other device, wait for a notification.
  2. Tap on the notification to open the page in a new tab.

Another feature that can be used for accessing websites on multiple synced devices is the Reading List.

The data to be synced is encrypted end-to-end

The data you send us is encrypted on your computer using a password that is never sent to us. In addition, the servers on which your encrypted data is stored are well protected from intrusion both physically and from the network.

When syncing, the encrypted data is sent to a central server, from which it can be requested from all other Vivaldi instances only by the same user. When one Vivaldi instance sends new data to the Sync server, a notification is immediately sent to all other Vivaldi instances to let them know that they can download this new information. This means you should see changes reflected within a minute.

Vivaldi stores Sync data on its own servers in Iceland. If you want to know more about how we handle your synced data please visit Sync’s Privacy Page.

Stop syncing

When you choose to stop syncing some types of data, the browser forgets all association between your local data and the data located on the Sync server. All your data remains on the Sync server as it was. When you explicitly log out from Sync, the same happens for all the synced data. Please note that quitting the browser does not log you out from Sync.

Delete synced data

To delete synced data from the servers:

  1. Open Sync Settings;
  2. Make sure you’re logged in;
  3. Click on Delete Remote Sync Data.
  4. In the pop up, click on Delete Data;

You will need to make sure that you have all your data client side before doing this to avoid losing data. Note that the data will be re-uploaded if you choose to run sync again in the future.

If, in addition to clearing the data and logging out of Sync, you’re also thinking of deleting your Vivaldi account, please note that when the account is deleted, you will also lose access to all other Vivaldi Community services such as webmail, forum, and blogs and all the data will be deleted. If you still wish to proceed, follow the instructions on our help page about deleting Vivaldi accounts.

Change or reset your account login password

If you wish to change your login password, log in on Vivaldi.net, go to your profile (top right corner) and change it there. In case you’ve forgotten your password, send yourself a password reset email. Note that if you have chosen to use the same password for login and encryption, changing your login password will not automatically change your encryption password and you will have to do this separately.

Change or reset your encryption password

In case you’ve forgotten your encryption password and don’t have a backup encryption key to decrypt the data or just want to change the encryption password:

  • Open Sync Settings;
  • Log into your Vivaldi account;
  • Click on Forgot password;
  • In the pop up, click on Delete Data;
  • Then Restart Sync again and enter a new password.

Your data will be deleted from Vivaldi’s Sync servers and re-uploaded from the computer you’re using once you enter a new password. In case the synced data isn’t stored locally on any devices (e.g. after a OS reset) and you don’t have a backup encryption key to decrypt the data, the synced data will unfortunately be lost when resetting the encryption password.

Error messages in Vivaldi on iOS

Sometimes browsing the web doesn’t go as planned and you end up looking at an error message instead of the web page you wanted to visit. Here are some of the messages you can encounter and suggestions for fixes.

No internet

This message is pretty self-explanatory. The web page couldn’t be loaded, because the browser wasn’t able to connect to the internet.

To fix the issue:

  • Check your Wi-Fi signal. If necessary, restart the router.
  • Check Mobile Data connection. You might be in an area without coverage or your mobile service provider is having issues.
  • Turn off airplane mode.

Aw, Snap!

This emotive message is shown when instead of loading the page, the web page crashes.

Often, simply reloading the page fixes the issue.

If that didn’t help:

  • Check your internet connection and when you’ve confirmed that you’re properly connected, reload the page.
  • If the page opens without issues in a Private Tab, delete the browser‘s cache and reload the page.
  • Close other tabs and apps.
