Troubleshooting issues

When you encounter an issue and you’re trying to determine whether you can fix it yourself or need to report a bug, follow the steps below. Remember that in many cases it’s important to reload the web page for any changes to take effect.

Restart the browser

Sometimes the simplest things help, so exit/quit the browser, and hopefully on restart the issue will be gone.

If you’ve kept your computer on for a long time, restarting the device may help as well.

Make sure the browser is up to date

If you’re using an older version of the browser, there’s a chance that the bug has already been fixed and you won’t be having the issue in the latest version of Vivaldi. So make sure to update your browser regularly.

You can also check recent Snapshot changelogs on our Snapshot blog. The latest fixes and newest features are tested in Snapshots, before being released in the Stable version of the browser. Then you need to wait until the next version of Vivaldi Stable is released.

Test in a different profile

On desktop, sometimes an Extension or a specific Setting can cause the issue. To check if that’s the case, test the website or feature in a Guest Profile or in a new User Profile.

Click on the User Profile button (the image can also be your chosen avatar or Vivaldi account’s profile picture) on the Address Bar to create a new profile or open the guest window.

Test in another browser

It is possible to install a second version of Vivaldi to test the issue. It’s best to test with the newest version of the browser, i.e. the Snapshot, as the likelihood of the issue being fixed is highest there and in that case, you just need a little patience until the fix is released in the Stable version. On Windows, you can install any version as a Standalone. On macOS and Linux, you can run the Stable and Snapshot versions side by side.

Since Vivaldi is based on Chromium, we sometimes inherit bugs from upstream. If that’s the case, you’ll likely be able to reproduce the bug in other Chromium-based browsers. In that case, please report the bug to the Chromium team.

Change the reported User Agent

Some websites make sure to check from which browser you’re viewing their pages from and based on the information may alter what you see. The websites may also block access to their content and features altogether. To check whether a website is displayed differently because you’re using Vivaldi, you can change the browser’s Sec-CH-UA identity and check the website again.

To change which browser brand is reported:

  1. Go to Settings > Network > User Agent Brand Masking.
  2. From the drop-down menu, select whether you want the browser to identify itself without a brand, as Vivaldi, Google Chrome, or Microsoft Edge.
In addition, you can set up a custom brand by entering the browser’s brand and version number manually.
  3. Restart the browser for the change to take effect.
  4. Visit the website again.

Disable Tracker and Ad blocker

Website functionality may depend on elements with trackers that are blocked by the Tracker and/or Ad blocker. Click on blocker shield button Content Blocker on the left side of the address bar to disable blockers and test the website.

Disable Extensions

Extensions are a common cause of issues on the desktop browser. That’s one of the reasons Vivaldi has so many built-in features – so your browsing experience won’t be hindered by extension compatibility problems.

To disable Extensions go to Vivaldi menu button Vivaldi menu > Tools > Extensions and toggle all Extensions off from the bottom right corner of each Extension card.

Lower half of an extension card on the Extension page

If the issue doesn’t occur with disabled Extensions, start enabling them one by one and test in between each re-enabled Extension.

Disconnect from VPN

Whether you’re using the built-in Proton VPN in Vivaldi or another VPN service, disconnect/pause the connection and reload the web page to see if the issue still persists.

Disable Hardware Acceleration

In case the issue you’re facing is related to playing videos and other media or to the user interface’s appearance and responsiveness, you can go to Settings > Webpages and see if disabling Hardware Acceleration makes a difference. Remember to restart the browser before testing the issue again.

Enable (Third-Party) Cookies

Cookies are used for a lot more than tracking users’ browsing habits. Sometimes websites require Third-Party Cookies to display content that was originally posted on a different site. For example, embedded videos or Vivaldi Blog’s comment section.

In Vivaldi, third-party cookies are blocked by default in Private Windows. To review and change your cookie settings, go to Settings > Privacy > Cookies.

Check your security software

Make sure your anti-virus product is up to date and not blocking Vivaldi. If your anti-virus product warns you about dangers in Vivaldi, it’s most likely a false positive. In that case, review your anti-virus product settings as they might be too sensitive. Read more about it in our answers to common security-related questions.

Reset settings

If the browser works as expected in a new User Profile with default settings, try resetting the settings in your main profile.

To reset settings:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to the settings category you want to reset.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the section.
  4. Click Reset [category name] Settings to Default.
  5. Confirm the decision by clicking Reset Settings in the popup dialog.

Some Settings, such as Enable Mail, Calendar and Feeds, will not be reset.

Delete Browsing Data

Websites get updated all the time, but information about the old version of the site is still stored in cache files and Cookies. This may cause discrepancies in the displayed website and occasionally even break functionality.

In addition, storing old browsing data for a long time will use up your device’s memory space, so deleting it every now and then can have a positive effect on the browser’s speed as well.

To delete Cache and Cookies on desktop, click on the Clear data button Clear Browsing Data button in the top-right corner of the History manager or go to Vivaldi menu button Vivaldi menu > Tools > Delete Browsing Data.

Delete all site data per website

If the issue is only occurring on a particular website you can opt for deleting Cookies and Site Data just for that site.

  1. Open the website.
  2. Click on the Site Info button on the Address Bar and select Site Settings from the menu.
  3. In the Usage section, click on Clear Data on the right.
  4. Confirm, by clicking Clear in the dialog.
  5. Reload the web page.

Delete Cookies and Site Data by cookie site

  1. Open the website.
  2. Click on the Site Info button on the Address Bar and select Cookies and site data > Manage cookies and site data from the menu.
  3. Next to the listed sites, click on Delete saved data from [site name] for each item you want to delete.
  4. Click Done.
  5. Reload the page.

Delete Cookies in Settings

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Cookies > Saved Cookies.
  2. Click on Show Saved Cookies.
  3. Scroll through the list of cookies or use the search box to filter out cookies by the website domain.
  4. Hover over the cookies you want to delete.
  5. Click on Delete Cookies button that appears on the right side.

Found a bug?

When you’ve followed the steps listed above and you can consistently reproduce the issue, please discuss it on our Forum. There, our Community members can test on their devices and either confirm the bug or suggest a fix for the issue. Some of them can also tell you whether the devs are already aware of the bug or whether a new bug report should be created.

To report a bug first check our bug reporting guidelines and then go to vivaldi.com/bugreport to file it.

Report a bug in Vivaldi

In this article we’ve put together some guidelines that will help you write a good bug report. A good bug report will help our developers reproduce and fix the bug.

Before reporting a bug

  • Make sure you have the latest version of Vivaldi. If you’re on an older version, please update your browser and check if you can still reproduce the issue.
  • If you can still reproduce it, follow the steps on our help page about troubleshooting issues in Vivaldi. Some bugs are caused by an Extension or a setting and can be easily solved.
  • Check the Forum. Well-known bugs, updates and temporary workarounds are often discussed there.
  • In case no one has mentioned the issue you’re having on the Forum, please start a new topic. Then our Community members can either suggest solutions for a fix or confirm the bug. When others can confirm the bug, please report the bug following the instructions below.

How to report a bug?

  • Report each bug separately on vivaldi.com/bugreport/. Reports with more than one bug cannot be processed because each bug is allocated a unique bugtracker number.
  • Describe the issue in as much detail as you can.
  • If you’re reporting from another computer / browser, include information about the Vivaldi version and the operating system the bug is occurring on.
  • Add an exact link to a web page where the issue occurs, so it can be tested.
  • It helps, if you include some information about the extensions and security tools you’re using – they often point us in the right direction.
  • If you’re having issues with audio or video give information about your installed codecs and graphics card/GPU (vivaldi://gpu).
  • You can add more information, by attaching relevant files (screenshotscrash logs, etc.) to the bug report.
  • After reporting the issue, you will receive a confirmation email from the bugtracker with the bug number VB-XXXXX, so make sure you give a valid contact email address.

If you have questions about the bug please ask in the forum first and do not forget to post the VB-XXXXX bug number. Our helpful forum moderators will be able to help you.

Important! Please do not use the bug report page for support or other questions. These questions should be asked on the forum.

Issues with a Third Party Product

Lastly, if you are encountering an issue with a Third Party product, such as a firewall provider or security software that your company has set up, please share with us the following information:

  • Product name
  • Product version
  • Relevant error messages

If support cases have been opened with the Third Party Product’s support team, we would appreciate information (e.g. a case number) about it as well, so we can reference it in case we need to contact the vendor.

Thanks for helping us make Vivaldi better 🙂

Settings

Use Settings to customise the look of the browser, log in to your Vivaldi account to synchronise your browser data, review privacy settings and much more.

Accessing Vivaldi Settings

There are multiple ways to access Settings in Vivaldi:

It’s possible to display all settings at once by choosing Display All located at the bottom of the list.

You can also search for the setting you want to modify by entering its term in the search field above the section list.

Many of the settings will be applied immediately; however, if a restart of the browser is needed for changes to be applied it will be denoted next to the setting as applicable.

Setting that requires a browser restart to take full effect

Settings options

To open Settings in a new Tab instead of a separate window:

  1. Go to Settings > Appearance > Window Appearance.
  2. Enable Open Settings in a Tab.

Settings categories in the column on the left are colored and grouped. If you prefer a more monochrome look on the category icons:

  1. Go to Settings > Appearance > Window Appearance.
  2. Enable Use Monochrome Settings Icons.

Reset Settings

If you’ve changed some settings after which the browser no longer behaves as you’d like, but you’re not sure which setting is causing it, try resetting the settings to their defaults.

Some additional settings can be accessed when typing chrome://settings in the Address Field.

Search

Vivaldi browser lets you search the web any way you like. Here’s how.

Search in the Address Field

  1. Go to Settings> Search and make sure Search in Address Field is enabled.
  2. Type the search term in the Address Field and press Enter.
  3. Vivaldi will display the search results using the default search engine.
    1. Use Search Engine nicknames to see results from other search engines.
Search bar

Search in the Search Field

Another option is to search the web using the Search Field on the Address Bar.

  1. Go to Settings > Search and choose between:
    1. Showing the full search field on the Address Bar,
    2. Showing only a search button,
    3. Disabling the search field altogether;
  2. Type the search term in the Search Field on the Address Bar.

To switch between Search Engines, click on the change search engine button Change Search Engine button on the left side of the Search Field and pick a different Search Engine from the dropdown menu.

When you search with different search engines from your default one in the Search Field, your last used Search Engine will revert back to the default one when you close the browser. To keep your last used search engine, go to Settings > Search and enable Keep Last Selected Search Engine.

To search for the same search term again, click on the arrow down button  Show Search History button on the right side of the Search Field to see a list of your latest searches.

To display the active Search Engine’s favicon instead of the magnifying glass, enable it in Settings > Search > Show Search Engine Icon.

The size of the search field on the Address Bar can be changed by placing the mouse cursor on the left edge of the Search field and dragging the mouse in preferred direction.

Search on the Speed Dial

  1. To search on the Start Page, go to Settings > Search and make sure the Show Search Field on Speed Dial is enabled.
  2. Type the search term in the Search Field on the Speed Dial.

To switch between Search Engines, click on the search engine favicon button on the left side of the Search Field and pick a different Search Engine from the dropdown menu.

To search for the same search term again, click on the arrow down button Show Search History button on the right side of the Search Field to see a list of your latest searches.

Open search results in a New Tab

You can have your search results open in a new Tab, instead of the current one when you search in the Search Field. This feature could be particularly useful if you’re doing research or need to look up multiple search terms at once.

To enable it, go to Settings > Search and tick the box for Always Search in New Tab.
Search settings

Alternatively, type the search term in the Address or Search Field and press ALT + Enter to open the results in a new tab.

Search images

You can do a reverse image search to find more information about it or to find similar images.

To do an image search:

  1. Open the web page with the image you want to search with.
  2. Right-click on the image to open the context menu.
  3. Select Search for Image. Select Image > Search for Image, if the image is also a link.

Search results will open in a new tab.

The search is done with your default Image Search Engine. To change the default search engine for images:

  1. Go to Settings > Search > Image Search Engine.
  2. Select your preferred search engine that offers image search.

Search with page selection

Instead of copying and pasting a search term from a web page to the Address or Search Field, right click on the highlighted text > hover over Search With > select a Search engine. To open the search results in a new background tab, go to Settings > Search and tick the box for Page Selection Search in Background (see the image above).

Search Suggestions

Among other options in Settings > Search > Allow Search Suggestions, you can decide whether to enable search suggestions in the Address and Search fields.  When enabled, you’ll get search suggestions as soon as you start typing in a search query. It’s a convenient feature, but has privacy implications. You can read more on our Team Blog.

Even if you have enabled search engine suggestions, in Settings > Search > Allow Search Suggestions, you can limit it to allowing search suggestions only if you type a Search Engine nickname, which is a clear indication that this is intended to be a search, not a URL.

Alternatively, you can manually disable search suggestions for particular Search Engines, by going to Settings > Search > Search Engines > selecting the Search Engine > emptying the Suggest URL field. Or you can use another Search Engine’s Suggest URL. For example, get suggestions from a more privacy conscious DuckDuckGo, even if you search with Google.

Available Search Engines

Vivaldi has several search engines available by default.

  • Bing – for searching the web via Microsoft Bing.
  • Yahoo – for searching the web via Yahoo.
  • DuckDuckGo – a search engine that doesn’t track users.
  • Yelp – for searching crowd-sourced reviews about businesses. Available by default in selected countries.
  • Ecosia – a search engine that plants trees.
  • Qwant – a privacy focused search engine. Available by default in selected countries.
  • StartPage – a private way to search Google.
  • Wikipedia – for searching the Wikipedia free online encyclopedia.
  • Google – for searching the web via Google.

Change the default Search Engine

You can set any of the search engines listed in Settings > Search Engines as the default Search Engine.

Option 1

  1. Go to Settings > Search > Default Search Engine;
  2. Select your preferred Search Engine from the dropdown menu.

Option 2

  1. Go to Settings > Search > Search Engines;
  2. Select the Search Engine you want to set as default;
  3. Tick the box for Set as Default Search.

To make your private browsing more private, you can set a different default search engine for the Private Window.

Option 1

  1. Go to Settings > Search > Private Window Search Engine;
  2. Select your preferred Search Engine from the dropdown menu.

Option 2

  1. Go to Settings > Search > Search Engines;
  2. Select the Search Engine you want to set as default;
  3. Tick the box for Set as Private Search.

Some search engines allow users to use the POST method for search. The combination of POST and no-redirects, ensures that websites won’t know the search terms you use to find their site, nor will your search terms be stored in your local history. If you have enabled Use POST method, but search doesn’t come up with any results, this means that the search engine of your choice doesn’t support the POST method. If you still want to use this search engine, you should disable Use POST method.

Search Engine Nicknames

Using Search Engine Nicknames, you can quickly switch between one Search Engine to another just by typing the nickname at the front of your search term.

  1. Get to know the default Search Engine Nicknames in Settings > Search > Search Engines.
  2. Start the search with the Search Engine Nickname, followed by Space.  For instance, the search term “d Vivaldi browser” will search for “Vivaldi browser” via DuckDuckGo.

You can change the default Search Engine nickname to anything you like by:

  1. Clicking on the search engine you would like to assign a new nickname to;
  2. Entering the new nickname in the Nickname field;

To hide search engine nicknames in drop-down menus, go to Settings > Search > Search Field Display and disable Show Search Engine Nickname in Drop-Down Menu.

Add a New Search Engine

Vivaldi lets you add your preferred search engines in a few simple steps.

Option 1

  1. Go to the page you want to add.
  2. Right-click on the search field of the page and select Add as Search Engine.Using the context menu to add a new search engine

  1. Do a search on the website you want to add as a Search Engine.
  2. Copy the URL of the search results page.
  3. Go to Vivaldi Browser Settings > Search > Search Engine Editor.
  4. Click on the Add button Add Search Engine button to add a new Search Engine.
  5. Paste the link to the URL field and substitute the used search term with %s
  6. Enter the Name and a Nickname for the Search Engine.
Adding a new search engine in Settings

Delete a Search Engine

To remove a Search Engine:

  1. Open Settings > Search > Search Engines;
  2. Make sure the Search Engine you want to delete isn’t set as Default Search or Private Search;
  3. Click on the delete button Delete search engine button.
  4. Confirm your decision by clicking Delete in the pop up window.

User Agent Brand Masking

Tick the box for Append Vivaldi Brand to, in addition to the chosen brand, add Vivaldi’s brand information at the end of the reported identity.

Important! Please note that changing the reported browser brand can cause compatibility issues with sites.
